Advanced Filtering

Here is a great tip that we came across whilst reading a book titled “99 Tips & Traps for Microsoft Office Project”  by Paul E. Harris. The book is a fantastic book that highlights many tricks, tips and traps for the “casual users” of the product.

This tip is one that is not commonly known, and hence we thought we would share it with you.

Open the “More Filters” dialog and create a new Filter:

The filter above will list any task whose Name starts with a ‘b’ and ends with a ‘d’ and is only 3 characters long, OR a task name that starts with a ‘b’ and ends with a ‘d’ and is of any length.

The ‘?’ wildcard character specifies a single character whilst the ‘*’ wildcard value can be used to represent any number of characters.

Another great filtering function is the prompt. The example below will filter any tasks where the “Start” is greater than an input value:

When the user selects the filter, a dialog Prompt is displayed allowing the user to specify the Date for the filter:
